Did you know you could infuse the medicinal properties of plants in honey?
It is a delicious way to get the medicine in and also you get all the health benefits of honey! Try using organic local honey for even greater health benefits to your immune system and help alleviating seasonal allergies.
You could try with Lavender, Thyme or even Garlic. For this recipe, I chose Schisandra berries. I have been so obsessed with Schisandra lately, it has so many health benefits for everyone, toning and fortifying almost every organs. And they have long been used in China as a longevity tonic.
This recipe is pretty simple, and only requires a double boiler. I also made a video tutorial you can catch here.
For this recipe you will need:
- pot of boiling water
- double boiler
- 1 cup organic honey – preferably local honey
- 2 oz Schisandra berries powdered
- sterilized jar (8oz)
Pour the honey in the double boiler. Let it warm up gently for a few minutes, until the consistency is more liquid.
Then, add the Schisandra berries powdered. Let the honey infuse for 30 – 60 minutes.
After you have let it infused, let it cool down for a few minutes.
Finally strain the honey and pour the honey in the sterilized bottle. Keep in a dark cool place, like a spice cabinet. You can use the infused honey for several weeks. Keep in mind: for longer shelf life, it is preferable to use dried herb and plant material to infuse in honey, rather than fresh plant material. The water content in the fresh plant material is will dilute the honey and spoil it faster.
