Spring cleaning isn’t just for the home! You can also detox your body and mind through diet, exercise and meditation. At the beginning of a new season, it is always a good idea to detox. But it is particularly important to detox in the Spring.
During the winter months, the body’s rhythms tend to slow down, so does our metabolism and our circulation. And as the food get richer (thank you holidays!), the toxins tend to accumulate in the body. Here, I will share with you my natural detox strategies.
Exercising and dieting are a great place to start. You don’t have to go completely vegan if it’s not your thing, but maybe start by incorporating more leafy green veggies to your diet (read: eat your salad!)
Additionally, there are a few plant allies who can further help detoxifying the body. Alterative herbs are a particular class of herbs that “gradually restore the proper function of the body and increase health and vitality” [– definition found on the Naturopathic Herbalist website].
These plants work by altering the metabolism processes of the body so that it is able to restore healthy functioning of a wide range of organ systems. To me the biggest pay off with alterative herbs is that they improve health and vitality by their gentle action, giving the body a little nudge so it can restore healthy functions on its own. They usually can be safely used in several conditions, particularly useful for chronic inflammatory or degenerative conditions.
My favorite detox herbs this spring are mostly geared towards liver detox. The liver is the first place to start when we want to detox. It is the largest organ inside the human body, and acts like a major processing center. Everything we eat, drink, breathe or put on our skin is processed through the liver. And with all the toxins and pesticides we encounter in our modern lives, this is a very big job! That’s why this spring you should show it some love, before it demands you to!
My favorite spring detox herbs are Dandelion, Burdock root and Schisandra berries. And here is why.
Don’t be fooled by this little sprig: its strong spirit has a lot to teach us. It supports the cleansing functions of the liver and kidney. It also feeds the beneficial bacteria from the gut flora, supporting a healthy digestion. Enjoy the detox properties of Dandelion by drinking a tea of the roots. Or try Dandelion coffee. It tastes and smells almost the same but without the adrenal fatigue that caffeine can bring on. The gentle effect of Dandelion will leave you energized, yet zen. Dandelion is the king of liver detox.
It is another great detox champion. Its gentle yet effective action supports the natural functions of the body’s detoxification processes: through the liver, the kidneys, the skin and lymphatic system. It helps clear the channels of elimination and accumulated metabolic waste. Burdock is one of the top herbs for clear skin, as it works from the inside out. It helps clear stagnation not only through the body, but also psychological and spiritual stagnation. When things clear up, we have the room to grow. For optimal effect, it is best to enjoy the benefits of Burdock over several weeks. It may not be a one-time wonder herb, but the effects will be long lasting when used over the long run.
These delicious berries have it all! For starters, they have all 5 tastes (sweet, bitter, salty, spicy, and sour). They improve healthy functions of almost every organ: liver, kidneys, lung, bladder, heart, brain, nerves and skin. Schisandra supports the immune functions, improves mental functions and coordination, helps the body’s natural resistance and adaptation to stress and promotes overall metabolic efficiency. The list goes on. Schisandra has so many benefits, I can’t list them all here. But in addition to what I mentioned above, the following are some incredible benefits that caught my attention: sharpens the eyesight and hearing, increases sexual stamina and pleasure, protects the liver from damaged caused by toxins from the diet and the environment, strengthens the kidney and the bladder and tones the lungs. Highly anti-oxidant, the berries are anti-aging and skin beautifying. They sharpen the senses and the mind. These rejuvenative berries have long been used in China as a longevity and skin beautifying tonic. Its benefits are best enjoyed over the long run, for at least 1 to 3 months at a time.
What about you? Do you have any strategies for Spring detox?
